Kelebogile (Pearl) Boikanyo

The rise of local opera singer Kelebogile (Pearl) Boikanyo is nothing short of amazing. The 24 year old hit the first of many high career notes by winning the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music 2012."I am confident that with enough hard work, I will have a bright future," said Pearl.

"This award means a lot to me, obviously because I am young and I am excited to be recognised in my own country. When I am on stage, it is because I love what I do, and I do it with passion. I do not expect any recognition, but this award tells me that people realise and appreciate good arts," she said. "As a young artist, it does not matter what field you are in. If you give the best at what you do and put in all your effort, good things will happen. Your work will give other people joy."

Humble statements from a girl who is clearly marked for an international future. The  National Arts Festival Committee member for music, Richard Cock, believes her strong clear voice and fine acting ability puts her on par with international opera stars: "I have heard Kelebogile in several productions recently, and she has been the star of the show. I really look forward to her concerts in Grahamstown."
