Standard Bank Young Artists

The Standard Bank Young Artist Awards were established by the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown in 1984 to recognise relatively established young emerging South African artists who demonstrate  outstanding artistic talent. The National Arts Festival Committee select winners in five different disciplines: Theatre, Music, Dance, Jazz and Visual Art-and from time to time Film.

2014 performance art winner

The National Arts Festival's 2014 Standard Bank Young Artist for Performance Art is Johannesburg-based public artist and lecturer, Donna Kukama. Born in 1981 in Mafikeng; Kukama completed her postgraduate studies at the Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais in Sierre (Switzerland) in 2008, under MAPS (Master of Arts in the Public Sphere), and is currently a faculty member at the WITS School of Arts (University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg). 

Despite her formal education, for which she acknowledges she is most grateful, Kukama's approach to her practice is experimental, and she mostly applies methods that she describes as 'deliberately undisciplined', as she navigates between spaces of performance, video, text, and sound installations....

2013 performance art winner

This year, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards includes a new award for Performance Art. The first recipient of the Performance Art award, Anthea Moys from Johannesburg, believes that creativity and risk-taking is an important generator for initiating newer approaches in engaging with the arts.

"I think it is just fantastic that Performance Art is being recognised for the first time in South Africa with this award, since Performance Art is relatively new here. I see myself playing a role as both an artist and a teacher in developing new spaces for performance art in South Africa," said Moys....
