The Standard Bank Gallery runs an extensive Education Outreach Programme whereby learners are invited to attend lectures and workshops at the Gallery.  During the lectures learners are handed these extensively researched and professionally written worksheets which can be used in the exhibition or in the classroom or home. These Education Supplements double up as posters for classrooms

The ethereal nature of fire has enthralled the human race for millennia. It can be seen, heard, felt and smelt, but it cannot be grasped. This exhibition of historical and contemporary African art, drawn from the Standard Bank African Art Collection, housed at the University of the Witwatersrand, explores the role of fire - in all its forms - in African cultural expression. From Sitting to Selfie: 300 years of South African Portraits

From Sitting to Selfie: 300 years of South African Portraits maps the long tradition of portraiture and its changing use and function in society. The exhibition includes a broad selection of portraits that record the likeness of particular individuals: William Mellville's Lady Smith  (1842), George French Angas' Utimuni, Nephew of Chaka 1(848) and John Centlivres Chase's John David Christian (Captain zu Bersaba) (1843) offer excellent examples of this oevre.
