FREE CONCERTS AT STANDARD BANK JOY OF JAZZ

The free concerts are a big component of Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and this year’s line-up, scheduled to play in Newtown on August 26 and 27, is likely to impress audiences with a diverse range of jazz stalwarts and newcomers as well as an award-winning trio from Germany.

There will be 16 performances at three venues - Nikki’s Oasis, Sophiatown and Shikioha – and the entrance is mahala, gratis, nothing!

Performing on Friday, August 26 at Nikki’s Oasis from 7.30pm is New Afroteens, D Tonic Momentum and Colours of Africa. Taiwa Jazz Band kicks off the action at Sophiatown at 7pm followed by Minor Band and Medumo Art Ensemble. Shikioha features Live Rhythms at 9.30pm followed by African Giants.

The line-up on Saturday, August 27, is as follows: At Nikki’s Oasis at 7.30pm Bow and Arrow followed by Take Note and the Tingvall Trio. New Afroteens at Sophiatown at 7pm is followed by Solace and Up Beat. Juxtaposed Virtue starts at 9.30pm at Shikioha followed by Quiet Storm.

The Tingvall Trio will be performing at the Bassline on Friday August 26th as part of the mainstream Standard Bank Joy of Jazz programme. However, the band who was last year awarded the Echo Jazz Award as Germany’s Best Domestic Jazz Ensemble, will be giving a free performance on the Saturday. The trio comprises Martin Tingvall (Sweden) on piano, Omar Rodriguez Calvo (Cuba) on double bass and Jurgen Spiegel (Germany) on drums.

All seating is unreserved.

The bands:
  • COLOURS OF AFRICA is made up of Portia on bass and Nthabiseng on saxophone. These two dynamic women met each other while studying music at FUBA and Gauteng Music Academy. The band plays contemporary jazz, African jazz, original music as well as cover music.
  • D-TONIC MOMENTUM is a jazz band that was founded in February 2005.
  • JUXTAPOSED VIRTUE was one of the bands that was part of the Puisano Live Music programme 2009/10 endorsed by the Department of Arts & Culture. The members are Lerato Mashigo on trumpet, Thabo Dhlamini on piano, Modise Mphuthi on bass guitar and Nhlanhla Sikane on drums.
  • MINOR BAND, formed in 2004, is Sipho Malinga (band leader, drums/percussions), Penuel Phangisa (bass player), Ntokozo Malinga (piano/keyboards & vocalist) and Moloko Kgomo (lead guitar). They play Afro Jazz with influences and elements from swing and bee-bob, Cuban blended with raw traditional African sounds, funk and soul.
  • NEW AFRO TEENS are a group of young South African musicians, based in Port Elizabeth, who play jazzy Afro pop.
  • QUIET STORM’s sound is jazz with a soulful African flavour that comes from fusing funk and traditional African sounds. Like many young bands the members met while they were all studying at the same tertiary institution. T-Low was added as a vocalist as she had a voice and spirit that fitted the band's style.
  • SOLACE (aka Solani Bridgette Maswanganyi) has been working with a seven-piece band since 2005. Having studied theory of music with UNISA, Solace draws her inspiration from giants such as Diana Reeves, Sibongile Khumalo and Miriam Makeba. She's is the recipient of a UNISA Best Up-Coming Jazz Vocalist prize and also won a 2008-2009 competition run by Puisano.
  • TAIWA JAZZ BAND performs indigenous music while playing contemporary instruments. They have undertaken tours to Brazil and the Netherlands. Band members are aged between 17 to 26, most of whom balance their school commitments with their love of African indigenous music and jazz.
  • TAKE NOTE is a seven-piece Port Elizabeth jazz band who recently released their debut album Rear Window. The album is mixture of contemporary jazz with Afro-Soul. “It is a reflection of the township traditional songs as well as modern changes in society,” says Take Note manager Thandile Petshwa.
  • TINGVALL TRIO comprises Martin Tingvall (Sweden) on piano, Omar Rodriguez Calvo (Cuba) on double bass and Jurgen Spiegel (Germany) on drums. They were awarded the Echo Jazz 2010 Award for the Best Domestic Jazz Ensemble of 2010 in Germany. With three album releases, Skagerrak (2006), Norr (2008) and Vattensaga (2009) , the band has achieved a level of musicality that has impressed a growing number of jazz fans. Live concerts turned into highly acclaimed season highlights with many successful bookings in Germany, and the trio has also gained plenty of new fans in Scandinavia, Poland, Spain, Italy, Japan and the Benelux region.
  • UPBEAT are winners of the Puisano Live Music 2009 and is made of four members from the Vaal who have all studied together.
